Up Around the Bend

Microsoft is around the corner from an exciting new release, perhaps as compelling as Windows Server 2008 itself - the contender to VMware's hypervisor dominance (ESX). Hyper-V (a Windows Server 2008 server role) has wrapped up and is ready to go to market (RTM - or Release To Manufacturing).

Diskeeper Corporation has worked closely with Microsoft to fully support Hyper-V from early on. That technology alliance includes the recent Microsoft announcement that Diskeeper was one of the first three software vendors to certify their software for Hyper-V (the other software vendors were IBM and Symantec). In the coming months it will culminate in advanced Diskeeper performance functionality announced by Microsoft several years back.

As a long time Microsoft Gold partner, we believe that Microsoft is providing an excellent option for corporation's looking to save power and space, ease provisioning efforts, and achieve full hardware utlilization through virtualization.

Also around the bend is the RTM for a new 2009 iteration of a Diskeeper software release - broadly available in late July/early August. Keep an eye open for the official release!

Diskeeper 2008 HomeServer is here!

As those who have followed this blog already know we formed a marketing partnership early on with Microsoft on their exciting new Windows Home Server (WHS) product. While both Microsoft and Diskeeper have had OEM versions of software available earlier this year (Diskeeper 2007 HomeServer has been available since August), Diskeeper coordinated a simultaneous release today, of our official product to the retail market with Microsoft's WHS retail release.

"Diskeeper has worked with Microsoft since Windows NT," said Steven VanRoekel, director of Windows Server Solutions at Microsoft. "It is great to work with them on the Windows Home Server platform to provide the maximum system performance and reliability possible to our customers."

The Diskeeper 2008 HomeServer provides functionality and accessibility uniquely necessary for WHS. The most visually evident addition is the new integration with the WHS management console.

However, under the covers lies an even more vital feature that makes Diskeeper compatible with Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

Microsoft's new Drive Extender technical paper provides a warning against running the built-in defragmenter on WHS.

"Caution: You should not use the DEFRAG utility on your Windows Home Server hard drives... The DEFRAG utility may cause issues with the Volume Shadow Copy Service that runs every 12 hours to create previous version snapshots of the shared folders on the home server."

Microsoft Support Article #312067 describes the technical details of the issue with VSS from which this warning originates, as it also affects Windows Home Server. Diskeeper engineers addressed this known incompatibility with defragmentation in Diskeeper 2008’s with a specialized new VSS-Compatible Mode. Using unique file movement algorithms via the online file movement control (FSCTL_MOVE_FILE) mechanism, the impact on VSS with Diskeeper 2008 is dramatically minimized allowing users to access previous versions of files that other solutions, without a VSS-Compatible defragmentation mode, would not.

With Real-Time defragmentation, InvisiTasking, and all the new Diskeeper 2008 functionality also included Diskeeper HomeServer is ready to keep your new WHS system running at peak performance.

Send us your worst fragmented disks... Diskeeper 2008 is here!

Do you have volumes with really, really low free space? Maybe less than 1%? Maybe you have files in hundreds of thousands or millions of fragments?

No matter how tough the problem, Diskeeper 2008 will handle the worst fragmentation you can throw at it. Diskeeper 2008 offers a host of new features and functionality with a concentration on "core" improvements to make defragmentation faster and more effective. Read all about it at www.diskeeper.com. I'll cover each improvement in more details here on the blog in the coming weeks.

Another exciting announcement is that Diskeeper 2008 is immediately available in 8 languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

I'll leave off with one early product review from Professor Brian Robinson at www.3dprofessor.org (a well known technical testing group in the UK).

"The team at Diskeeper most certainly have an exciting new product that, in most areas, showed up to (and in certain applications) a 28% increase in performance over a Windows system with no defragmentation tool installed. [Diskeeper 2008 showed] Up to 14% increase in performance in certain areas over Diskeeper 2007, which is quite a remarkable achievement!" - Professor Brian Robinson.

CNET upgrades to Diskeeper 2007

CNET Labs is one of the leading independent reviewers of technology. As is important in any scientific test, CNET needed to eliminate variables that could skew comparisons of computer systems, and addressing fragmentation was a key consideration for them. They know that a fragmented desktop or laptop will perform worse than a defragmented one, potentially invalidating a test.

You can view the process methodology for desktops and laptops.

Earlier this year I had a long conversation with the Director of their test labs, and while I can't disclose the nature of their evaluation of various defragmentation programs, their product needs are similar to what your defrag software requirements would be.

CNET Labs has been a member of the Diskeeper family for years, and we are certainly pleased to support their upgrade to Diskeeper 2007!

Lets Talk Computers Radio Show

The Lets Talk Computers radio show aired 2 interviews with Anthony Crea. Anthony is our Channel Manager. As part of his key responsibilities he's an expert on Diskeeper and Undelete. He travels (practically non-stop!) around North America training resellers and distributors on them.

In part 1, Anthony Crea discussed many simple, but important ways that companies can increase the efficiency of their employees, by making the computers they use faster, easier and more enjoyable to work with. Part 2 continues the discussion.

Listen to it here, or read the transcripts here (Part 1) and here (Part 2).

Diskeeper and Windows Home Server

Today Microsoft announced Diskeeper's planned support for Windows Home Server. You can read more about it here or here.

Windows Home Server will help families with multiple PCs easily centralize, share and protect their digital pictures, music, documents and videos. It simplifies a family's life, connects their digital devices and experiences, and will grow with their needs.

"We are pleased to work with Diskeeper to help provide maximum system performance and reliability possible to Windows Home Server customers," said Steven VanRoekel, director of Windows Server Solutions at Microsoft. "Diskeeper has worked with Microsoft since Windows NT. It's great to see them extend their expertise to our new platform for the home."

Diskeeper Corp is one of the orginal 8 software companies to support Microsoft's new consumer-oriented server system. As a "headless" operating system, the automatic, hands-off design of Diskeeper will be a big asset to maintaining optimum performance on a system that is sure to store large quantities of data.

If you are beta testing Windows Home Server today, you can trial Diskeeper Server for the time being. An official Diskeeper release at a consumer-friendly price will be available in the near future. I'll post a release announcement on the blog when that is available.
