New Diskeeper Build (11.0.701) available
We've released another build of Diskeeper 2007 with a few minor fixes and new functionality. This build will install on Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista. Here's the list of enhancements:
1. This product always requires Product Activation upon install.
2. Silent Activation is enabled which will automatically activate when an internet connection is found.
3. If an Internet Connection is not found, the ability to manually activate the product is available (also for PC's not connected to the Internet).
4. Fixed some User Interface refresh issues.
5. Changes have been made to prevent Diskeeper from unnecessarily polling floppy disk drives in Vista (already fixed for other OS'es in build 698).
6. Reliability and performance issues handled.
7. Diskeeper now preserves timeframe exclusions when imaging across multiple machines.
8. Diskeeper defragments NTFS Metadata Files ($Extend) in XP and above online. This includes the USN Journal.
9. Diskeeper now recognizes Encrypted Virtual Drives.
10. Fixed minor issue regarding MFT fragmentation reporting.
11. Boot-Time Directory Consolidation is now available for FAT volumes.
12. Some 508-compliance (accessibility) issues have been fixed.
13. Fixed InvisiTasking graphs for Foreign Operating Systems.
14. I-FAAST Measurement fixed for Foreign Operating Systems.
15. Fixed various minor Vista Compatibility Issues.
This build is available via Check for Updates if you are running Vista. Due to the fact that this build requires activation (and you may not have had to do this in the past) it is not yet available via Check for Updates for XP/2000 users, though will be in the near future. You can, however, grab the trialware from our website and install it over an older, licensed, build of Diskeeper 2007. This is essentially the same as downloading and installing the trialware from the Check for Updates site.
I anticipate one more build release for Diskeeper 2007 in the coming month or two as we complete other minor accessibility requirements for our standard Microsoft "Logo" Certification for Vista and Windows 2003.
PS: Sorry for the hiatus from blogging. I've have been (and still am out of town - travelling in East Asia, meeting with partners and customers). I will answer questions asked in in the blog after March 10th.

Michael,
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this blog! It's always bothered me not knowing what all is included in the latest build (or even knowing when a new "internal" build is released). This particular build also seems like it will fix problems we've been having on our servers where our C: drives are over 200% fragmented (impossible) because of it incorrectly calculating the UsnJournal fragmentation.
THANKS AGAIN!
Matt

The updates option keeps telling me that 697 is the latest build.

The build is not showing up for me on Check Updates. Still showing that 697 is the latest whenever I check - I have Vista Ultimate 32bit

I am disappointed to see the newest version requiring activation. This is probably the most hated feature of XP and Vista. This is going to give more reasons for people to go with the competition. Activation was also the reason I stopped using TurboTax and started using Taxcut. Microsoft can get away with it because they have no real competition in the desktop market. Disappointing to see this happen with such a great product.

My server has windows 2003 5 cal version.
The diskeeper does not recognize usb drives for defragment. Please suggest a solution. System has a 500 GB 7200 rpm disc usb hard drive.
Thanks.

Hm, this is NOT good news. I assume you've got a full documentation of how this activation works somewhere? Could you please provide a link to it for us enterprise customers who can't just roll out any utility without knowing exactly goes where for what reason (yes, we'll be seeking to verify it ourselves, obviously)?

We had a couple of readers comment on the product activation. It's a seamless process that takes 2-3 seconds. You can read more about it (how, why, etc...) on our FAQ page:
http://support.diskeeper.com/support/diskeeperfaqs.aspx?Page=5&Subpage=2&cust=1&RId=1&CId=1&SId=5
Volume License customers can also contact their Sales Rep for more information.

I agree that the TurboTax activation was poorly executed and caused issues. DRM rootkits have also been used by other companies. These are examples of bad implementations that threaten the security and stability of the PC. Diskeeper activation is benign. In most cases, except network where computers are not allowed internet access, this process will be entirely invisible and go unnoticed. Volume customers can always contact their Sales Rep for more information and additional netowrk solutions. More info will also be added to the FAQ site over the course of the next few weeks.

Under what circumstances will Diskeeper require re-activation?

How can I get this new build? It is not showing up during the check for updates

Just installed Diskeeper 2007, its taken the process of background defrag one step ahead, Real time defrag in the background is superlative, enables us to forget about this one maintenance chore to say the least. I have been able to go about running my applications without a single issue while this is running.

I use Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit and a trial version of Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier (latest build 706). The problem is that still Diskeeper can't defrag the USN Journal Online. As i see now the USN Journal is 74 MB and has 48 fragments. I can see also pink files across the drive.
Is this a limitation of the Trial version or something else happening and Diskeeper can't defrag the USN journal online?
One last thing to mention. Next to USN journal there also this "Excess Allocation" if that helps.
Posted by: Aonoror at May 20, 2007 11:52 AM
Hi. The USN Journal is a file used to track changes for various purposes such as 'change replication management'. It acts as a container which may or may not be full at a given point in time. When this file is not full, its actual in-use size will be smaller than the files total size. A good way to describe the remaining unused space is to call is "reserved space". A defragmenter is only allowed to defragment the in-use part of the file, not the reserved part.
I'm planning a future blog on the USN Journal and its use in Vista as well as some "tweaks" you can do to this file.

Hi there, i noticed like Aonoror, that my computers USN journal did not get completely defragmented, but the USN journal on my computer is over 10 gb in size, why is it so large, and how can its size be reduced?
I am very impressed, by diskeeper, and will be buying it once my trial period expires.
Keep up the great work.

Hi Heart,
We'll have an update of Diskeeper 2008 that will defrag the USN Journal - I'll write a new entry on that as I agree it's a good topic in its own right.
You can alter the USN Journal using fsutil.exe. I would not, however, recommend altering this file as it can have a negative impact on certain functionality such as Windows Vista's Search.
I do still plan a post, some time in the future on the USN tweaks.

Why can I not get Diskeeper to see my network drives. I am running the EnterpriseServer edition.
Posted by: David Johnson at March 6, 2008 01:41 AM
Hi David,
Defragmenters do not support remote (network) drives. So if you have a remote NAS box, or the volume is actually mounted on a remote Windows system you'll need to run defrag from that OS.
Many NAS boxes use Linux, which offer very limited options for defrag utilities.
